Wondering what to wear under board shorts or how to wash them? Get answers to all of your board short questions so you can get in the water in style and comfort.

1. WHAT DO I WEAR UNDER MY BOARD SHORTS?

It's not critical to wear a garment under your board shorts. But, if you’re going to be in the water for extended periods of time and need added support, rash protection, and/or muscle stabilization, we recommend wearing Hurley compression under your board shorts.

2. WHAT DOES LENGTH MEAN WHEN IT COMES TO BOARD SHORTS?

Board short length is measured by the outseam (top of the waistband to the bottom of the hem) as opposed to the inseam. You’ll find our board shorts categorized by shorter (16” – 17” outseam), standard (18” – 19” outseam) and longer (20” – 21” outseam).

3. WHAT DOES ELITE MEAN?

Elite is a classification of Hurley board shorts. Elite board shorts signify our highest quality board shorts and feature a welded seamless construction along with innovative. technically engineered waistbands.

4. WHAT ARE HYBRIDS?

Hybrid shorts are shorts that you can wear in and out of water. Hurley hybrid shorts feature lightweight, quick-drying material to make your transition from water to land comfortable.

5. WHAT DO THE DIFFERENT SEAM OPTIONS MEAN?

Welded seams are used in lieu of a standard, sewn stitch. These seams are fused together via heat, creating a surface that’s flush with the skin to reduce chafing. Sewn seams are just like they sound. This type of construction will show a stitch visible to the naked eye.

6. BOARD SHORTS VS. SWIM TRUNKS: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

“Swim trunks” refer to a pair of shorts designed for use in water but were not necessarily designed with performance in mind. Swim trunks typically feature an elastic waistband and mesh liner. Board shorts are designed for activity and sport in water, do not have a mesh liner, and feature a fixed waistband with a tie or drawcord that keep them locked in place.

7. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SUPERSUEDE AND PHANTOM?

Phantom is Hurley's stretch fabric. Phantom is lightweight, comfortable and quick drying. It's currently offered in two options: P60 (60% stretch) and P30 (30% stretch). Supersuede is an alternative board short fabric made of 100% recycled polyester. It is a soft, durable, non-stretch fabric. Phantom is Hurley's stretch fabric. 8. HOW DO I WASH MY BOARD SHORTS?

To keep your board shorts in the best condition possible, always hand wash in cold water and line dry. In terms of detergent, small amounts of gentle shampoo, dish soap or mild laundry detergent work best. Doing this not only helps keep your board shorts clean, but prolongs the life of the DWR coating on them. Care instructions are also listed on the inside of every pair of Hurley board shorts.

9. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SCALLOPED HEM AND A STRAIGHT HEM?

Board shorts with a scalloped hem have a scoop cutout on the outside of each leg. This cutout helps you move easier in high-performance situations. A straight hem is exactly what it sounds like - a straight edge all the way around the hem of the board shorts.

10. WHY DOES THE WAISTBAND MATTER SO MUCH?

The waistband is the only substantial point of contact between the board shorts and your body. This allows it to react to your movements in the water and offer superior comfort and stability when you need it most.

11. WHY ARE BOARD SHORTS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN SWIM TRUNKS?

Every pair of Hurley board shorts is a premium garment, but the variation in price comes from different constructions and attributes. A welded, heat-fused seam will cost more than a standard, sewn seam due to the technology involved. Features such as a highly-technical woven or fused waistband, or welded internal pockets can also affect the board shorts’ cost.
